Another example is this Tina Arena performance where she sounds incredible, but the audience is just kinda staring at her. The thing about a dead crowd is that it isn't an indictment on the performer, someone can be giving an amazing performance but there's no way to force an audience to react so if they're dead, they're dead. ![]() Opening a major film awards ceremony with a performance of an unrelated decade old album cut was already a very bold choice, but what really makes the performance feels so off is that the crowd doesn't seem that into it. So if you've been online in the past few days you've probably seen this clip of Ariana Debose performing at the BAFTAS, which is hilarious and iconic, and it reminded me of another underrated uncomfortable awards show performance: Janelle MonĂ¡e doing "Come Alive" at the 2020 Academy Awards
